Board Member Information Each member of the Governing Board is elected to serve a four-year term. Every two years, either two or three positions are filled during the November general election. Board candidates must reside within the district boundaries for one year prior to being elected to office. Arizona law does not limit the number of terms a member may serve.

At the organizational meeting in January, the Board elects a president and clerk. If a vacancy on the Board arises, the county school superintendent may appoint a replacement, call for a special board election or authorize the position to be filled through the election process in a general election year.

Board members are uncompensated elected officials who work for their community.

The Board's Role:

The five elected members of the Mayer Unified School District's Governing Board play a critical role in the formulation and approval of policies which guide the operation of the district. Implementation of these policies are overseen by the superintendent and district staff.

The Board is empowered to function within the framework established by the Arizona State Legislature, court decisions, opinions of the attorney general and county attorney, and applicable state and federal regulations. The Board fulfills its mission by executing the following duties:

  • Approves courses of study and instructional materials
  • Hires all school district employees and determines their duties under written contracts at salaries fixed by the Board
  • Adopts a budget for fiscal year July 1 through June 30
  • Approves funds for the planning, expansion, improvement, construction, maintenance, use, furnishing and financing of buildings
